Cebu Pacific, the Philippines’ leading airline, invites wandering Juans to explore Asian destinations with an open mind and a thirst for adventure, one shot or cup at a time.

Sampling unique beverages is a filling way to orient a traveler on the culture and way of life of a particular place or country. From utterly sweet to overwhelmingly strong, from the traditional to the pleasantly bizarre, these drinks have what it takes to satisfy the thirsty traveler traversing through Asia.

Exotic drinks

One of the popular drink here in the Philippines is Lambanog, among farmers who drink it to wind down after a day’s work in Quezon province, lambanog is made from the sap of the coconut flower and is known for its potency. Drinking lambanog is traditionally a communal activity among folks in the province who take turns drinking from a single glass, while somebody plays guitar and sings in the background, making the festivities more interesting as the drinking goes on. Very affordable but extremely strong, a popular brand of this local drink recently got an international nod as one of the top liquors of the world from Monde Selection’s World Selection of Spirits and Liquors.

This year, the movement is bigger and better with partners from health institutions and leading hospitals joining the advocacy, through the Philippine Public Health Association. “We wanted to help people who have suffered the consequences of poor hygiene. We want to educate them on proper toilet sanitation that will enable them to prevent sickness from happening again,” said Anna Mangilin, Unilever Marketing Director for Homecare.

Here are the Five Awesome Reasons To Make Every Day A “D” Day

As presented by Dr. Stan Chua, a Functional Medicine Practitioner trained in the Institute for Functional Medicine, Washington DC, USA, and Health Optimization Medicine Consultant in the BioBalance Institute. For folks who live right by the sun-drenched equator, it’s ironic that Filipinos are largely Vitamin D deficient. Local research shows that 7 out of 10 Filipinos are low on this vital nutrient. Considering that Vitamin D is absorbed by the body through the sun, one would think that Filipinos are “over-sunned.” “But, inadequate sun exposure is extremely prevalent in the Philippines—surprised?”

1. Tired of being tired?

According to the Vitamin D Council, deficiency in Vitamin D may cause low energy, including depression and chronic fatigue.  Other familiar symptoms may be brittle bones and even the propensity to put on some excess weight. We may not draw the connection easily, but our Vitamin D levels may be the culprit. Why? “Vitamin D has many physiological effects and affects the function of many organs,” simplifies Dr. Michael F. Hollick, Ph.D., MD, professor of medicine at the Boston University, and one of the world’s experts on Vitamin D. As such, we may be suffering from symptoms caused by our levels of “D.”

The programme follows the lives of three boys who earn a living by cutting down bamboo poles on the mountainside and carrying them back home.

One of the three boys, RJ, was hit by a motorcycle when he was eight years old. Although he survived the accident, he lost his hearing. “We cut down the bamboo, then walk a long way back home carrying heavy bamboo poles on our shoulders,” RJ, now 15, says in sign language. “We do this so we will have money for food. I envy other kids who can play all day, but I can’t. I need to go up the mountain to get bamboo.”

Children around the world miss an estimated 443 million school days each year because of diseases caused by poor sanitation and hygiene practices, including using unsanitary toilets. Simply put, this number of sick days is equivalent to all grade school and high school classrooms in the Philippines being empty for one month. This sanitation-related concern hinders the children’s learning and significantly reduces their quality of life. This is according to a study conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Illnesses due to poor toilet sanitation include diarrhoeal disease and parasitic worm infections which can lead to nutritional deficiencies, physical and mental stunting, and death. Every day, millions of children in rural communities and urban households nationwide are exposed to these health problems by using dirty toilets populated by disease-carrying germs.
